Hints and Tips

Good preparation for an application form and ultimately an interview can be your key to successfully securing a role in school. It will certainly give you more confidence and a better understanding of what you would like to share with your prospective employers.

Below are a few ideas you should consider in your preparation:

  *   Check your private details. Is your postal address, email and contact number up to date in case potential employers choose to contact you?
  *   First impressions count. Make sure you have appropriate email addresses and voice mail messages.
  *   Keep your options open. Apply to as many LA pools and LA databases as you can. There is competition for roles so be willing to explore different LAs and schools.
  *   Be aware of closing dates. Many LA pools have closing dates in February and March so review the LA websites to check application criteria.
  *   Read over the guidance information. Remind yourself exactly what the school or LA requires in your application form or interview. Do not submit generic application forms, tailor it to the person specification.
  *   Keep a copy of your application forms. It is always useful to remind yourself about what you have included on your application. You are likely to be quizzed over statements you have made so be ready for this.
  *   Don't forget to check your spelling and grammar on all the information you have entered. It will not look good to potential employers if you have several spelling mistakes in your application form.
  *   Plan a reliable way of getting to your interviews. Make sure your journey plan allows you to be a few minutes early.
  *   Keep in touch. If you are part of a LA pool or database contact the LAs directly once you have been offered and accepted a position at a school. It is important that LAs have accurate and up to date information in order they do not waste headteachers or your time.
