The London Borough of Greenwich

Time for Teaching… Time for Greenwich!

Teach in Greenwich and take advantage of everything a world city like London has to offer. Greenwich is one of inner London’s largest boroughs, with a rich, culturally diverse community and maritime heritage. It lies on the south bank of the River Thames in a world famous and picturesque location, and has many areas of green, open space, the 02 Arena and fantastic transport connections - central London is only 15 minutes away.

Greenwich is steeped in heritage with the town centre being designates as a World Heritage site while the capital’s oldest Royal Park, Greenwich Park, offers panoramic views of London. Greenwich is one of the Mayor of London’s priority areas for growth and regeneration and by 2020 over 40,000 new jobs will be created through the Thames Gateway Development and a major modernisation programme for local services and transport. As one of the five boroughs hosting the 2012 Olympics this area will see significant investment with an unprecedented regeneration and economic growth.

In common with any city, Greenwich faces significant challenges. Tackling inequality is a top priority in education as well as in the wider community. Successful regeneration, neighbourhood renewal and improving service performance, including raised levels of attainment, are creating the best opportunities for young people in the borough for many generations. Our schools value and celebrate the diversity which exists in Greenwich, and we are working with schools to ensure they are led in a way that children enjoy and achieve and reach their fullest potential in a secure, happy and challenging environment.

Greenwich Children’s Service is looking to recruit exceptional teachers who can inspire learning. We want teachers who are committed and enthusiastic, who will encourage all our pupils from a diverse range of backgrounds to reach their maximum potential. Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) will find Greenwich a fantastic place in which to begin their career. We have developed an extensive centralised programme for primary and secondary NQTs, designed to complement the support provided in school and we work hard to ensure the statutory requirements are not only met, but exceeded, to ensure a positive and rewarding experience for all involved. We provide a thorough and extremely highly valued centralised induction programme, which includes an overnight conference.

Our commitment to you does not end there. A programme of support and development is being implemented for teachers in their early careers, and a very successful conference is available for teachers looking to progress their careers. The Improving Leadership Programme in Greenwich is creating some exciting opportunities for middle managers and beyond.
