Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
  Question:

How do I borrow resources?

  Answer:

You browse the site to choose what you want then you contact us by e-mail and arrange to collect them from us. See 'Contact Us' on the Home page for details.

  Question:

For what period of time can I borrow items?

  Answer:

Usually for half a term. However if you wish to borrow a box/item for longer you can do so if it has not been reserved by another school.

  Question:

How do I register to be able to borrow from the Centre?

  Answer:

You will need to pay an adminstration fee in advance. Contact us for price for this academic year. Make cheques payable to London Borough of Bromley and send to: Mandy King/ Multicultural Resources Centre/ Walsingham Centre Chipperfield Road St Paul's Cray Orpington BR5 2QR

  Question:

How many items can I borrow at a time?

  Answer:

You can borrow any number of books. However you will only be able to borrow one themed box box at a time.

  Question:

You have an item which says it is 'available for loan' yet it is part of themed box. Can I borrow it individually?

  Answer:

No, there are very few artefacts which can be borrowed individually, they are almost always part of a themed box (the description of the item will tell you which box). To see whether it is available look to see whether the box is out or not.

  Question:

Can I borrow one copy of an individual novel?

  Answer:

At the moment all fiction (other than dual language books) is loaned either as part of a mixed book box or as sets of the same book. We may consider in the future loaning single books of fiction if there appears to be a demand for it. Non fiction titles may be borrowed individually.

  Question:

Does it cost anything to borrow from the Multicultural Resources Centre?

  Answer:

There is an annual registration fee (cheque payable to London Borough of Bromley) to cover administration and new resources. After paying you may borrow as many items as you require at no further charge. Contact us to find out the fee for this academic year.

  Question:

Will you deliver the things I want to borrow?

  Answer:

We cannot as a rule offer this as part of the service. However if one of the Learning Support Services (EAL/Traveller /Literacy/Numeracy teams) works in your school they are usually more than happy to deliver/collect. Failing this teachers will have to collect from the resource centre in Chipperfield Road. Find a map in the 'Contact Us' section of the Home page.

  Question:

Is car parking easy at the centre?

  Answer:

Not always, depending on the adult education classes running at the time, although between 4 and 5 pm it is usually quiet. However your pre-ordered items will be waiting for you in the Pupil Support Services office and so the transaction should take less than 5 minutes. Should the car park be full it is accepted practice to double park in the car park if just loading .

  Question:

How do I borrow several books on one theme?

  Answer:

Type in the theme in the 'search' box and all the books we have available will be displayed. You can pick out those suitable for your Key stage and borrow as many as you wish.

  Question:

What exactly is a 'mixed book box' and how would it be used?

  Answer:

These are boxes of twelve assorted books, primarily fiction, all of which have a multicultural theme or positive Black images. They are for 'book corners' or for loan as individual books for silent reading, giving diversity to what you can offer your students.

  Question:

You have a book that I'd like to use with a group but you only have one copy. Can you get a group set?

  Answer:

Yes, given enough notice we can order more of any resource that we carry. We are here to respond to what you tell us you want, so do let us know if you would like us to get anything in.

  Question:

I have some objects that I would like to donate. How do I do this?

  Answer:

Just send us an e-mail. We would also happily reimburse you if you are travelling somewhere out of Western Europe and are prepared to buy items for us.

  Question:

I'm doing a topic and you don't appear to have any resources connected to it, can you get them in?

  Answer:

Yes if we think it will fit in with the multicultural focus of the centre. We will of course need sufficient notice.

  Question:

I have an EAL child in my class but I am not sure that she can read in her mother tongue. Is it worth my borrowing dual language books?

  Answer:

Definitely. Even if the child cannot read she may recognise her own script. The book could be sent home for a parent to read. It is good practice to have dual language books in the classroom anyway, whether or not you have EAL pupils, so all children can see languages/scripts other than English. Why not borrow a set of the same book but in a variety of dual languages?

  Question:

I have some great teaching ideas to go with a borrowed resource, are you interested?

  Answer:

Yes please. We want this site to become a teaching resource as well as a loan centre. If we can all share our ideas for teaching and web links we can achieve this.
