Things to do

Learn more about plants and animals and enter your observations to a national database via this page. A really interesting picture of wildlife biodiversity within the Site is beginning to emerge, but we need to know much more. To check what has been seen and the significance of contributions made, follow the instructions at the bottom of the page under, 'Record your sightings'.

Events

If you would like to find out more about some of the plants and animals that Darwin and his friend, neighbour and protégée, John Lubbock, studied within the Site, there will also be an ongoing programme of family events, training opportunities and walks. Some of the 2009 activities are supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. All the family events, walks and survey training must be booked in advance by phoning 01689 862815 or e-mail: countryside&parks@bromley.gov.uk.
The events listing can be viewed on the Events page.

Trails

Why not explore Darwin's home patch with the 3 self-guided trails and find out more about his life at Downe in the 'Darwin at Downe' booklet which you can download from the Maps and Trails page.

Record your sightings

We would very much appreciate your help in finding out more about the current biodiversity of the Site, so please do let us know which animals and plants you have seen and where they were. We are particularly interested in sightings of the plants; viper's bugloss, mistletoe, great and white mullein or any evidence of cuckoos or nightingales. Your records will be sent to Greenspace Information for Greater London (GiGL) this is the capital's open space and biodiversity records centre. They collate, manage and make available detailed information on London's wildlife, parks, nature reserves, gardens and other open spaces. Information you send us will be used to map the distribution of species within the site. To view distribution online for any species log on to www.searchnbn.net and type into the 'Search box' the species or site you are interested in. In most cases it will be possible to see whether the plant or animal is present within a 1km square but it will only be possible to view the distribution of threatened species at 10km resolution. Go to the Record your sightings page.
