A collaborative approach to Darwin Inspired Learning
Drama and science students from the sixth forms at Charles Darwin School and Newstead Wood School were mentors to pupils in Years 3 and 4 at Cudham and Downe Primary Schools when they investigated the life and times of Charles Darwin.
The family rooms at Down House were brought to life by drama students in costume as they assumed a variety of roles, including Charles and Emma Darwin, their daughter Annie and the long-serving butler, Joseph Parslow. Work in the grounds at Down House was focused on plant species and a hedgerow sweep to examine minibeasts. This was followed up with a laboratory session which enabled the younger pupils to gain a further insight into the scientific approach which so characterised Darwin’s work.
This event was funded through the Council’s Heritage Lottery funded project ‘Exploring in Darwin’s Footsteps’.
