Transport Routes project

The 'natural' element of transport routes provides a significant contribution to the overall habitat available for wildlife and also an important backdrop for the journeys of residents and visitors through the Borough.

Well-vegetated roadsides and railway verges act as 'green corridors' and permit movement of wildlife (mammals and seeds for example) between adjoining sites. Some areas are of biodiversity quality in their own right, such as the chalk grassland verges that exist along some of our A-roads. '‘Unnatural' elements of transport routes can also be important, for example bridges and tunnels can provide roosts for bats.

We are looking to highlight the value of our transport routes as part of this project. We aim to involve residents in enhancing local roads and to involve rail commuters in establishing a wildlife area at one of the Boroughs train stations.
