| Walking is really good for you and it's also the best way of spotting interesting things. We invite you to encourage children to walk to school and take part in fun activities on the way. Walking to school benefit your children:
Of course walking more regularly, in addition to the routine journey to and from school, brings the greatest benefits! To get involved we have produced a pack of activity cards to guide you and your child through each term. You can download them from these webpages. The Pack includes 9 activity cards, 3 for each term. Each card has a theme and includes an activity for walkers of 7-9 years of age and an activity for walkers of 10-11 years of age. Adults are encouraged to involve their young walking companions with at least one activity a term. The activities have been designed to ease participation and limit impact on punctuality. Parents and carers walking their young companions to school independently, can simply choose the day or weeks they want to try out an activity. Who is the pack for? The pack is aimed at young people who are:
We are increasingly becoming a sedentary population, with obesity among children fast becoming a major health problem - perhaps affecting as many as 1 in 7 children in Britain. The Department of Health promotes the prevention, management and treatment of obesity in children. Exercise is encouraged - and there's no easier exercise to participate in than walking! Using a pedometer may help encourage young people to think about how far and how often they walk. A top priority is not to compromise the health and safety of those taking part, so:
By design, none of the activities require the handling of natural items or the touching of features found along your route. However, it's worth being aware of the potential risk of infection by bacteria (for example Tetanus or Toxocara canis), especially where your young companion has cuts or touches their face. It's good practice to ensure that your young companion washes their hands on reaching school or uses antiseptic wipes you provide. |
