Foreword

The London Borough of Bromley regards services for young people to be of paramount importance. It is vital that future generations have the education, qualifications and skills they need to succeed in the modern world. Through education, individuals are set on their way to achieving their potential. Through the knowledge they have gained, as members of society they are able to influence and contribute towards the building of sustainable communities.

This File is innovative. It aims to inspire you, as a Key Stage 1, 2 or 3 teacher, to promote two key aspects of a sustainable community – sustainable travel and biodiversity. Both contribute significantly to our quality of life. It encourages you to use the natural environment as a tool throughout the teaching of the National Curriculum, but without the need to be a ‘biodiversity expert’. It promotes opportunities provided by sustainable transport and integrates this with healthy living objectives.

You may be puzzled as to how the File got its name? The ‘Walking with Beetles File of Educational Activities’ has been created as part of a ‘Walking with Beetles’ initiative based within ‘The Beck Corridor’ with support from Transport for London, the London Borough of Bromley, as part of the SUN Project, has been working to: enhance the environment around ‘The Beck Corridor’; promote understanding of the biodiversity within its green spaces; encourage enjoyment of biodiversity through walking and the use of sustainable transport. Taking account of these elements, the threatened stag beetle provides an ideal icon for the initiative, as Beckenham is a population hotspot for the stag beetle in Britain!

The File incorporates ‘off-the-shelf’ lesson plans, worksheets, teachers’ notes and resources to ease your involvement. It has been created for schools within the London Borough of Bromley, and perhaps may even be of value to others beyond the Borough boundary. Enjoy using it!
