Getting Involved

Walks, talks, displays and special events are organised by a number of groups and organisations in the Borough. A number of these contribute to the BBAP. Check out the information below to find out what's going on! If you would like us to promote a biodiversity event you are doing, email conservation@bromley.gov.uk. Fri 1st October - Autumn Walk

10.00am. Meet at High Elms main car park, off High Elms Road for a wander through the woodland looking at the fruits and colours of autumn. Distance: 2 miles, Grade: 2, Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.


Sat 2nd & Sun 3rd October - Autumn collage weekend

12.00pm – 4.00pm. Drop into BEECHE this weekend and make a seasonal collage. Use natural materials to decorate your favourite woodland animal. Numbers may be limited at busy periods. Charge: £2.10 per child.


Mon 4th October - Nature Toddle

2.00pm. Meet at BEECHE, High Elms Country Park. We will begin with a story and then go for a short walk. An event for the under 5’s and their parents.Distance: 0.5 miles, Grade: 2, Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.

Sat 9th October - "That's what Friends are for" walk

10.00am. Meet at Tent Peg Lane Car Park, off Crest View Drive, Petts Wood. Led by Jennie Randall of the Friends of Jubilee Country Park. Have you ever wondered what Friends of parks groups do? Come along & find out on a gentle stroll around Jubilee Country Park. NO DOGS PLEASE. Distance: 2 miles, Grade: 2.


Thurs 14th October - Local bird walk

9.30am. Meet at the Manor Road entrance. Join RSPB Bromley at Kelsey Park. NO DOGS PLEASE. Distance: 1-2 miles, Grade: 1.


Fri 15th October - Three Autumn Views

10.00am. Meet at Cuckoo Wood car park, off High Elms Road. Come along for a guided walk which takes you past three lovely views around Downe. Led by BCS. Distance 2-3 miles, Grade 3. Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.

Sat 16th October - Charcoal burning demonstration at High Elms Country Park

11. 00am - 3.00pm. Drop in to High Elms Country Park for a chance to see the process that turns waste wood into charcoal and a display of its history and uses in times past. Follow the signs from the main car park.


Sun 17th October - Apple Day at High Elms

11.30am – 4.00pm. Meet at BEECHE, High Elms Country Park. Join us as we promote ‘National Apple day’ – celebrating the traditional orchard and local apple varieties. Take part in some apple themed events, taste apples and juices produced from local orchards and purchase produce from Hewitts Farm and the Orpington Bee Keepers.


Fri 22nd October - Plant Tales

2.00pm. Meet at Leaves Green car park, Ashmore Lane. Find out about past uses, folklore and superstitions of local plants around this Halloween-time! Led by BCS. Distance 2-3 miles, Grade 2. Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.

Thurs 28th October - Halloween Walk

6.00pm. Meet at BEECHE, High Elms Country Park. Ghouls, ghosts and goblins are all welcome to join the witches and wizards of High Elms for a spooky family walk through the woods. Suitable for children aged 5 and over. NO DOGS PLEASE. Admission by ticket only. Distance 1 mile, Grade 3E. Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.

10.30am. Meet at Cudham Recreation ground car park, Cudham Lane South. Take a look at the explosion of shapes and remnant fruit, nuts and seeds in our local hedgerows, woodlands and grasslands. Led by BCS. Distance 2-3 miles, Grade 3. Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.

Sun 14th November - Winter Wander through Jubilee Country Park

10.30am. Meet at car park off Church Road, Biggin Hill. Enjoy the crunchy autumn leaves and woody skeletons of the winter landscape. Led by BCS. Distance 3 miles, Grade 2. Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.

Mon 29th November - Lunchtime talk: Ivy – the myth and the reality

2.00pm. Meet at BEECHE, High Elms Country Park. Join Alan Cathersides, Conservation officer for English Heritage, to discover more about Ivy and historical buildings. Why not pop in to the Green Roof café before hand to grab some lunch? Charge: £2.00 per person.

7.30pm. Meet at the Garden Room, St Augustine's Church, Southborough Lane, Bickley. Join the Friends of JCP to find out more about owls & meet some too! Admission free, donations welcome.

Mon 20th December - Winter Story-time

5.30pm. Meet at BEECHE, High Elms Country Park. Come for a walk in the woods, listening to stories as you go. Back to the centre afterwards for hot blackcurrant and cookies. Distance: 1 mile, Grade: 3E, Charge: £2.10 per child.

Tues 21st December - Escape to the Country

1.00pm. Meet at Norman Park (car park off Hayes Lane). On the Winter Solstice, escape a bit of the hussle and bussle of Christmas preparations and relax a while in the rural outskirts of Bromley Town Centre! Walk ends on Oakley Road / A21 to catch a bus back to town. Led by BCS. Distance 2 miles, Grade 2. Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.

Thurs 23rd December - Christmas folklore and mince pies

11.00am. Meet at BEECHE, High Elms Country Park. Join one of the Countryside Officers for a short stroll around the estate learning about the connections between nature and folklore at this time of year. Back to the centre for a mince pie! Distance 1-2 miles, Grade 2. Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.

Sat 25th December - Christmas Day Stroll TBC

10.30am. Meet at the junction of Kelsey Park Road and Manor Way, Beckenham to join others for a short walk around Kelsey Park to give you an appetite for your Christams dinner! Led by EnBro. Distance: 1 mile, Grade 1.


Mon 27th December - High Elms Winter Challenge

11.00pm – 2.00pm. Meet at BEECHE, High Elms Country Park. Drop in to the centre anytime to pick up you challenge sheet and then head off round the estate to try and find all the answers. Come back to the centre for a small prize. Self led activity. Distance: 2 miles, Grade: 3 Charge: £2.10 per sheet.


Tues 4th Jauary - Stepping Out

1.30pm. Meet outside Chelsfield Village Hall, Bucks Cross Lane. Start 2011 with a bounce in your step and enjoy the benefits healthy walking can bring you! Try out an easy, flat walking route across farmland and woodland, with the Bromley Countryside Service. Check if can book car park. Distance 2-3 miles, Grade 2. Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.


Sat 8th January - Local Bird Walk

9.30am. Meet at Hayes railway station. Join RSPB Bromley at Hayes Common. NO DOGS PLEASE. Distance:1-2 miles, Grade 2.


Sun 9th Jauary - Try Out...An Audio Trail

A number of audio trails have been produced within the Borough. Why not try out one at High Elms and find out more about the past and present of Sir John Lubbock's estate? Borrow a headset for a returnable deposit of £5 or bring your own MP3 player and download it on the day. Bookings taken for: 9.00am, 11.00am, 1.00pm and 3.00pm.

Sun 23rd January - Lovely Lichens at Hayes

10.00am. Meet at Baston Road car park, Hayes. Join us for a short guided walk on the common, looking for the many different species of lichens found there. Distance 1- 2 miles, Grade 2.


Tues 25th January - Try Out ... A Circular Walk

10.30am. Meet at the car park next to The Queen's Head pub, Green St. Green High Street. An opportunity to sample the southern half of this circular walk route - though participants are welcome to continue and complete the full 7.5 mile route if they wish! Led by BCS. Distance 3.5 miles, Grade 2. Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00

Sat 29th January - Feed the Birds

12.00noon. Meet at BEECHE, High Elms Country Park. Come along and make up a wild bird feeder to help your garden birds through to spring. Part of the Big Garden Birdwatch celebrations. Charge: £2.10 per child.

Mon 7th February - Try Out ... The Green Chain

10.30am. Meet outside Burnt Ash Library, Burnt Ash Lane. The Green Chain is a network of 40 miles of walking routes through green spaces across four Boroughs, passing through the northern part of Bromley. Explore part of the Green Chain Walk around Sundridge and Mottingham Woods on this guided walk. Led by BCS. Distance 2-3 miles, Grade 2. Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.

Mon 28th February - Try Out ... The LOOP

10.30am. Linear walk following part of Section 3 of the London Outer Orbital Path (LOOP) from outside Hayes Railway Station to Farnborough village (buses available to Orpington from where buses to Hayes are available: lift back to Hayes station also available). Come and enjoy the trees of West Wickham, Hayes and Keston Commons and the open space explored by Darwin around Holwood, Downe, High Elms and Farnborough on this guided walk. Bring a packed lunch. Distance 6 miles, Grade 3. Charge: Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.

12.00 - 4.00pm. Did you know H.G Wells lived in Bromley, or there was a Tudor manor house at Scadbury Park? Bromley has a rich historical heritage. Come along to BEECHE, High Elms Country Park and find out more. Join Bromley Local history society, ODAS, Bromley Museum and others.

Fri 11th March - Try Out ... The Beck Corridor

10.30am. Meet under the village sign at Beckenham Green. Explore part of the Beck Corridor which links the London regional routes of the LOOP and Capital Ring through the Beckenham and West Wickham area. Linear Walk from Beckenham Green to High Broom Wood. Option for participants to do half the walk from Harvington Estate. Distance 3 miles, Grade 2 Adults £1.60, Child & 60+ £1.00.

Sun 13th March - Discovering the geology of High Elms

12.00 – 4.00pm Drop into BEECHE, High Elms Country Park. Meet the Ravensbourne Geological society, who will be exhibiting fossils, rocks and answering questions on all things rocky. A guided geological walk will leave BEECHE at 2pm.


Tues 15th March - Local Bird walk

Sat 19th March - Marvellous Mosses

10.00am. Meet at Westerham Road (top pond) car park, Keston, to find out more about these beautiful little plants with a local expert. Distance: 1 mile, Grade: 2.

Saturday 14th August - Wildlife Day at Dorset Road Allotments

11am-3.30pm. Have a walk aroudn the site with the allotment holders to find out what the allotment association has been doing to help wildlife at Elmers End. No site parking available.


Sunday 15th August - Nash Circular

10.00am. Meet at Heathfield Road car park, Keston. Join a guided walk around one of Bromley’s circular walks, through woodland, farmland and the hamlet of Nash. Led by BCS.

Wednesday 25th August - Meandering South-Westerly

11.00am. Meeting at Orpington Station (Station Road/Station Approach junction). Return by the R5 or R10 bus to return to Green St. Green and Orpington beyond. Lifts also available. Enjoy the mix of habitats and lovely views whilst taking a breath of late Summer air along a linear route from Darrick Wood to Cudham Recreation Ground along meandering paths. Bring a packed lunch. Sunday 5th September - Blackberry Hunt

Sat 11th & Sun 12th September - Scadbury Manor: ODAS Archaeology Open Weekend

2.00pm -5.00pm (last entry 4.30). The site entrance is at the point where the circular footpath passes the moated site. Take the footpath beyond No 12 St Paul’s Wood Hill, turning left along the circular footpath (a few minutes’ walk); or take the footpath from the Old Perry Street car park (a half-hour walk).
You’ll follow self guided trails to see areas not normally open to the public – including the manor house foundations on the moated island (with Tudor kitchens) – and walk round the outside of the World War II bunker. There are also refreshments, a bookstall, and an exhibition about the history of Scadbury. (Some parking available for elderly/disabled people on application. 2pm. Enjoy biodiversity on an early autumn walk around Kelsey Park, Beckenham Town Centre, Cryodon Recreation Ground and Crease Park. Meet at the junction of the Hihg Street and Kelsey Park Road. Display and leaflets at Kelsey Park Information Centre 2-4pm.

Saturday 18th September - Lubbock’s Mansion to Darwin’s Down House

9.30am. Start from High Elms main car park. Celebrate the anniversary of when Darwin moved to Downe on 17th September 1842, take an early morning stroll from High Elms Country Park to Downe village and back and hear about two neighbourhood friends and their life at home. Appreciate the habitats they would have seen when visiting each other. Led by BCS.

Join in some family games and activities around the theme of dinosaurs, fossils and insect-eating plants. Drop-in sessions start at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm.
