Environment Education

This part of the website provides information to teachers and aims to encourage and help teachers deliver the ‘biodiversity message’ and other aspects of environmental education to young people.

Generic education objectives highlighted in the BBAP include:

•

To develop and support environmental education initiatives and facilities.

  To promote educational material.
To carry out positive management work on land under influence or on Council owned land, including school grounds.
To support training for and involvement in wildlife survey initiatives and to especially encourage schools to become involved.

Take a look at the following!

Walking with Beetles File of Educational Activities
A pack of educational material for Key Stage 1, 2 and 3, using ‘The Beck Corridor’ as a case study. To access the contents of the File click here for the 'Walking with Beetles File of Educational Activities'. You will then see a main menu to the left of the screen from where you can simply select the links, so you are able to view, download or print off pdfs.

The ‘Walking with Beetles File of Educational Activities’ aims to inspire Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 teachers to promote two key aspects of a sustainable community – biodiversity and sustainable travel. It encourages teachers to use the local and natural environment as a tool throughout the teaching of the National Curriculum. The File uses an area known as The ‘Beck Corridor’ (London Borough of Bromley) as a case study.

On these webpages 44 ‘off the shelf’ lesson plans, 33 worksheets and 21 teachers’ notes can be found. The lesson plans are principally classroom-based with suggestions given on extending work out of doors and at home. A printed version of the File was published and distributed to schools in the London Borough of Bromley during Summer 2007 and included a full set of supporting resources; it has only been possible to provide some of these resources on these webpages.

Production of the File was funded by the London Borough of Bromley, EU LIFE Environment Programme and Transport for London Investment Programme.

Discover Darwin
An educational resource pack that helps teachers explore the science of Darwin and to replicate some of the investigations and experiments he did at Down House and within the surrounding countryside.  Available at www.darwinslandscape.co.uk, the lessons encourage KS2 and KS3 children to follow in Darwin’s footsteps and explore the subjects and chapters in 'The Origin of Species' at school or in local green spaces. The curriculum topics of science, literacy, numeracy, art, history and ICT are covered in an integrated way. These self-contained lessons can also form a module suitable for a science or environment week.  The pack was produced by The London Borough of Bromley and The Charles Darwin Trust with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Green Chain Educational Directory
